BOX 1 of BOOKS FOR SALE FROM THE COLLECTION OF JAMES AND LINDA HOEFER
(For Box 2 Click Here.)

In the interest of time, no effort has been made to sort or categorize the list, below, and many of the descriptions are sketchy at best. The reader is invited to examine the list, and ask any questions. A virtual inspection via YouTube video and / or up to five jpg images may also be requested. Please submit requests via the email address displayed at the bottom of the page. Although it is intended to sell as many of these books on eBay as possible, we are willing to consider any offer. The list below represents only a small fraction of the collection, but it is hoped to eventually have the entire collection inventoried and listed here.

The List

Papa was a Preacher     Click here for larger image     Click here for larger image     Click here for large image    by Alyene Porter,
© MCMXLIV (1944) by Whitmore & Stone. Illustrated by Janet Smallery. Abingdon-Cokesbury Press, New York, Nashville. Inscribed on the inside of the front cover, "To Roxy and Charley from May" and has a "Merry Christmast" stamp annotated 1944. Cover is in fair condition, with a tear in the upper left corner and another in the lower left corner, where the spine meets the front cover. The spine is a bit bent at the top and bottom and there is a stain on the bottom of the front cover and spine. the back is a bit soiled, and the bottom corners are worn to the core and slightly rounded. On the copyright page is an entry concerning Wartime Books and the efforts made to conserve paper and copper by using conservative printing techniques. It was hard to find this hardcover copy on the internet, even without any images, but Amazon dot com lists it at prices from $ 0.33 up to $242. The book has been made into at least one Stage Play and at least one movie (1985 - with Imogene Coca, Dean Stockwell, Robert Pine, Georgia Engel, et. al.)

A Breath of Air - by Rumer Godden, © 1951 by The Viking Press, New York.
"Rumer Godden's island of Terraqueous is magical - and yet utterly real. When Valentine first saw it from his half-submerged plane, after the storm had thrown him off his route, it actually looked familiar to him - and he knew why: - - - " (From the jacket)

The Practical Stock Doctor (Click here for larger image) (Click here for larger image) Compiled from the most successful Veterinarians in the world and also containing over Two Hundred Tried and Tested Remedies and Receipts of many of the most successful Farmers and Stock Owners in the United States [of America] and Canada. Edited by Dr. Geo. A. Waterman, Professor of Veterinary Science, Michigan State Agricultural College. Illustrated. Published by F. B. Dickerson Company, Detroit Michigan, 1908.
The edges and corners of the cover show a little wear and fraying, the corners are bent just a little. There are a few loose pages but the block of pages and the binding are in good shape, otherwise. It looks like something may have been spilt on the block of pages nerar the front of the book, but the stain does not penetrate to the text area. There are a few pages with pencil marks on them, but by and large, the entire book is free of foxing (age spots) or other damage. The narration says certain pages are not illustrated - that is an error. Those pages, which ARE, in fact actually illustrations, are not NUMBERED. The seller has been hard pressed to find this exact volume available on the Internet, except possibly for a few other offerings on eBay that lack any detail other than the title and a "Buy it Now" price considerably higher than the starting bid on this work.

Essays, by Ralph Waldo Emerson. (1920?) First Series, Stratford Edition. New York: The F.M.Lupton Publishing Company. Nos. 72-76 Walker Street. Hardcover, slightly frayed at the top of the spine. No copyright page. Inscribed Chas. E. Ellison (owner?) and inside, being used as a bookmark, was a non related receipt dated December 24, 1920. A web search indicates this volume could fetch as much as $250.oo or more.

Maury-Simonds Physical Geography, by M.F. Maury, LL.D. © 1908 by Frederic William Simmonds, late supeintendent of the NavalObservatory, Washington, D.C. - Revised and largely rewritten by Frederic William Simmonds, PH.D., Professor of Geology in the University of Texas. Entered at Stationers' Hall, London. Published by American Book Company, New York, Cincinnti, Chicago. Sadly, some of the pages and the flys have been scribbled on with what appears to be lead pencil. The front and back covere have begun to de-layer and curl on the exposed corner. The spine, however, seems to be in fair condition. Amazon dot com price - used (1908) starting at $52.50

One Foot in Heaven The Life of a Practical Parson (Hardcover, with well loved dust jacket) by Hartzell Spence, Illustrated by Donald McKay. Gorsset & DUnlap, Publishers, New York b Arrangement with McGraw-Hill Book Company, Inc. © 1940 by Hartzell Spence. Listed at Amazon dot com from $2.50 to $50

The Scottish Chiefs, by Jane Porter, Inscription on fly indicates a copyright date equal or prior to 1893 Book is much handled, spine cover pealed loose, Front Cover nearly detached, bookmark (an ad for Lillibridge’s fine cholclates, Minneapolis) included as a bonus – unfortunately, said bookmark has left a mild stain on the pages where it was left.

Mine Own People and American Notes, by Rudyard Kipling; note on fly “Merry Xmas 1899” is only clue to copyright date, b New York, The Merson Company publishers. Cover is in fair to good condition. Little to no foxing on the pages, which are, understandably a light chocolate brown.

Marching Songs for Young Crusaders No 2 (paperback booklet, 5” x 6&1/2" X 1/8th") not specifically copyright protected, but dated August 1890, which may or may NOT be the actual publication date. The red cover has apparently had something spilled on the back, as there is a spill shaped discoloration on the back cover and a red "bleed" stain on the last page.

Bonnie Prince Charlie by G. A. Henty, Illustrated by Gordon Browne, New ork: A. L. Burt, Publisher, no copyright or publishing date, but the fly indicates it was a Christmas present in 1895.

An Essay on Criticism by Alexander Popoe, (paper back booklet, 4&1/2" X 6&1/2"X 1/8th") New ork: Maynard, Merrill, & Co. - Apparent copyright April 23, 1898. Enscribed as a gift on Dec 4, 1899

The PRINCE of THE HOUSE OF DAVID or, THREE YEARS IN THE HOLY CITY, by Rev. J. H. Ingraham. Copyright 1859 by G. T. Evans, Copyright 1883, 1887 by Roberts Brothers. Somewhat worse for time, the spine and front cover have become almost completely detached from the block of pages, and the cover is somwhat worn along the edges nd wornd to the core at the corners. The pages themselves, however, are reasonably free of foxing or stains, but not entirely so.

The CHRISTIAN FATHER’S PRESENT TO HIS CHILDREN by J. A. James, NORTHAMPTON: PUBLISHED B HIRAM FERRY, 1826. Sadly, this small (4&1/4” X 7&1/4” X 7/8th”) work is badly foxed, with many pages in danger of becoming detached, pages 127 through 134 are missing the lower half, the cover is heavily used and there are what appear to be water stains for several pages front and back.

Elementary Physiology and Hygiene THE HUMAN BODY and ITS HEALTH. A text-book for schools, having special reference to the effects of stimulants and narcotics on the human system by William Thayer Smith, MD., Professor of Physiology in Dartmouth Medical College. Copyright, 1884, by Ivison, Blakeman, Taylor, & Company, Publishers, New York and Chicago. What is obviously a home-made cloth cover, sewn in place, prevents observation of the original hard cover. There is a cameo-shaped oval cut from the top corner of the first fly page, and the interior pages have moderate foxing and more than a little soiling as though well read by someone more interested in knowledge than proper care of the book. Still, it is not dirty as to make reading an unpleasant chore.

THE HONORABLE PETE STIRLING and WHAT PEOPLE THOUGHT OF HIM by Paul Leicester Ford. Twenty-Ninth Edition, New York, Henry Holt and Company, 1898. In good condition, very little foxing, very little wear on the cover.

His Pa’s Romance, by James Whitcomb Riley. Illustrations b by Will Vawter ad a portrait by John Cecil Clay. © 1903 by James Whitcomb Riley

Tales of Sherlock Holmes, by A. Conan Doyle. Published by Grosset and Dunlap – sadly, no date is to be found. However, the volume is apparently quite old, and some of the spelling is of ancient style (clew for clue, for example). Perhaps an expert could date it based on the other works being advertised on several of the back pages.

The Vicar of Wakefield, by Oliver Goldsmith. The F. M. Lupton Ppublishing Company. Pages are brown and brittle, with some minor tears -–only clue as to vintage would require an expert analysis of the advertising in the back – I.E. Twent-fice Cents a Bottle for "Mrs. Wilslow’s Soothing syruup – children teething – and three pages of fine print advetising for other books.

Thee Men in a Boat. By Jerome K Jerome, Published by The Henneberry Company, Chicago – No clue to the vintage – just "old".

Life Among the Indians or Personal Reminiscences and Historical Incidents Illustrative of Indian Life and Character, by Rev. James B Finley – The book is undated. However, an expert may be able to judge the date by the advertisements in the back.

Don Quixote De La Mancha, Translated from the Spanish of Miguel Cervantes Saavedra. Complete in one volume, W. B. Conkey Company, Chicago. Although there is no date, the very fine print and the advertisements suggest – to me - the early 1940’s

John Halifax, Gentleman, by Miss Mulock (Mrs. Craik). W. B. Cokey Compny, Chicago. the very fine print and the advertisements suggest – to me - the early 1940’s

John Halifax, Gentleman, by Miss Mulock (Mrs. Craik) – Apparently an older book, pages shown much wear and the binding is pulling away from the spine. Some of the pages show mild damage, but the book seems to be still readily readable. No date found.

Little America Aerial Exploration In The Antarctic The Flight To The South Pole by Richard Evelyn Byrd, Rear Admiral, U.S.N., Ret. With 78 illustrations and maps. © 1930, G. P. Putnam’s Sons. Bookplate inside front cover. Some discoloration of cover, block of pages coarse, a bit worn on the corners, and uneven on the long edge, but nothing drastic – Light foxing on some pages inside

Bismark, The Story of a Fighter, by Emil Ludwig. Translated form the German by Eden and Cedar Paul. © 1927 Blue Ribbon Books. Cover in decent shape, binding intact very little foxing,

Land Of Giants, The Drive To The Pacific Northwest 1750-1950, by David Lavender, © 1958. Jacket a little the worse for wear, Cover and block of pages show evidence of mild water intrusion. Block of pages slightly warped, but the binding is still sound and the book is easily readable.

Queed, A Novel by Henry Sydnor Harrison, © 1911 with a frontispiece by R. M. Crosby, Grosset & Dunlap Publishers.

Museum Piece: Packard Bell Computer System with Cannon BJC-250 Color Printer Click Here for larger image. Asking just $25.00. (Up to six hours free training in Metro Idaho Falls / Ammon, Idaho, included.) Windows 95 installed on one disk drive, Windows 3.1 on the other Click Here for larger image. Great fax/telephone answering software installed. Sorry - this system is not presently Internet capable. However, by the same token, it is not Internet hackable, either. NOTE: Although working when retired from service, there is no guarantee the printer will still work, nor that the computer will continue to work for any specified period - hence the designation "Museum Piece". We must clean out our storage sheds! Comes with e-mail and telephone technical support for the first 30 days! Located in west Idaho Falls, Idaho, this Packard Bell 450 computer system, with a 1994 Phoenix BIOS, still works "after a fashion." It has: an 80486 DX2, 66 MHZ, Mother Board, one 1114 MB and one 854 MB hard drive (2 Gig is the limit for this OS), 640 KB system memory, 39 MB ("40 MB") extended memory (that's HUGE for this operating system!); a 1.44 MB floppy, and a Matshita CR-72 CD-ROM (Player only); the monitor is a 17" Packard Bell with mounted amplyfing speakers; the printer is a Cannon BJC-250 of dubious operability and dubious ink availability; the keyboard is a standard 102 key unit with numeric keypad. The Modem is a Packard Bell 14.4 AM (SP) modem/sound card. One of the hard drives is wedged into the case, as there is no place to mount it, but is snug. One hard drive is set up with Windows 3.11 but requires special "boot up" procedures, and the other has windows 95 installed. Factory "Restore" disks for both operating systems come with the purchase. (The PS-2 mouse is missing, but may be available through other sources - tecnical support may include instructions on how to get around without it if necessary.) Why would anyone WANT this antique? Well, besides being a great display piece and conversation starter, since internet access may not be possible without some extra software and a dial up connection, hacking into it would be virtually impossible without physical access. It would be a great 'starter' system for a youngster, and it has a fantastic telephone answering / fax system that can make your home business come across like a mega-corporation. Please use email link, below, for initial contact. Phone number and drive directions provided on email reqest.

Another Musuem Piece: Compaq P70 Color Monitor Click Here for larger image. Asking just $5.00 for this 17-inch Trinitron CRT [15.68-inch (39.82 cm) diagonal viewable image size]. Any offer considered. Please use email link, below, for initial contact. Phone number provided on email reqest. Item is in west Idaho Falls, Idaho.

This 33 page, 1.62 MB, Adobe Reader (PDF) file is free to download - just right click the picture and select "save target as". If you find the information useful, a donation in any amount, no matter how small, would be appreciated (see below). Free HEAT From Paper Cones is a homegrown manual that describes the benefits and construction of a home made air heating solar collector. As the original WORD document has been archived, updates will be quite some time in coming. Meanwhile, the copyright makes reference to Toad Kissers International - which is no longer a viable enterprise. None the less, James W. Hoefer, the author, is the sole copyright holder. The reference to Apt 3 is now obsolete, as James has moved to Apt 1. The letter "c" was accidentally dropped from the word "cones" in one instance (it should be obvious to any reader who is paying attention). Toad Kissers International was the DBA for James W. Hoefer, so any references thereto can and ought to be applied to gabbyjim dot com. The concept of storing heat in containers filled with water is a tried and proven technique. However, even without that feature, the collector will still provide quite a lot of free heat. By the time the project described was finished, some 900 gallons of water (in a 900 square foot house) had been stored in the crawl space beneath the house (in 5 gallon plastic bottles, in cardboard boxes) The bottles for the water based heat storage were obtained free from a Pizza Hut franchise that was just throwing them away! It took several months to collect them all, which was a good thing, as filling each bottle (with a couple drops of dish soap to disperse the remaining oil) and stacking it under the house was a bit of a chore. The "through the window" test set up was later changed to move the heated air through a vent into the crawl space. Please contact the author (see bottom of page) for important details pertaining to that feature. (I.E. the furnace blower running needlessly - a mixed blessing).     As indicated above, donations to help compensate the author for his efforts are appreciated. For those who prefer to send cash, check, or money order via snail-mail, please send to: James W. Hoefer, 202 Moonlite Dr Apt 1, Idaho Falls, ID 83402-2374 For those who would prefer to use a credit card, please use the "Donate" button, below.
